Safety Initiative of the Year

BSS introduced a safety improvement programme - called LiFT - to educate colleagues on a different approach to manual handling which went beyond the usual ‘back straight bend your knees’ training course.  Whilst this is important, our programme covers this at the end, we focus far more on eliminating the need to lift in the first place.  This strategic approach is what LiFT is fundamentally about and brings a positive legacy for colleagues who work for us now and in the future.  The LiFT programme takes colleagues from branches through an open coaching style and helps them work through what they can do within branch to eliminate or reduce the need to lift or carry items.  From the course they develop a personal safety improvement plan which they work through before returning for day two when they learn how to train colleagues on behavioural safety techniques, safe lifting and handling.  BSS Regional Teams then support the colleague with focused safety conversations supported with project teams to support implementation of any ideas. The LiFT programme is also approved by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
