Viessmann collaborated with HUF HAUS, the market leader for contemporary post-and-beam architecture in Europe, to equip a UK residential property with a first-of-its-kind technology. As a pioneer of eco-luxury and carbon neutral homes, HUF HAUS wanted to demonstrate how sustainable living can be achieved through contemporary architecture and cutting-edge technology. HUF HAUS opted for Viessmann’s ice store system, a new, innovative and easy-to-install package that supplies a renewable heat source to heat pumps for heating or cooling a building and heating hot water. One or more tanks, equipped with one extraction and one regeneration heat exchanger, are filled with 10 m3 of water and set into the ground. When combined with a brine/water heat pump, the energy held by the water inside the ice store is used as it changes into ice. An ice store of approximately 10 m3 generates a heat gain equal to around 100 litres of fuel oil from this phase transition. As a result, the ice store combined with a solar air absorber, represents a fully-fledged heat source for brine/water heat pumps. This provides a creditable alternative in areas where drilling for geothermal probes is not permissible for environmental reasons or where costs are unreasonably high.
