District Heating Project of the Year

Vital Energi, on behalf of Camden Council, have designed and installed the first phase of the ‘Somers Town Energy’.  This scheme consists of a future-proofed energy centre and 0.5km of district heating pipework which serves four Camden Council estates comprising 339 homes. Phase one has seen the installation of underground pipework in one of the busiest areas of Camden.    Initially, the energy centre will house three new gas boilers.  Further phases will see an additional boiler and a CHP added; increasing heat generation capacity and the capability to provide low carbon electricity to the Francis Crick institute.    Further heat loads have been identified and analysed for future phases and discussions are under way for phase three connections. Pipework has been future proofed with increased capacity to meet additional demand and allow future expansion, but will also run efficiently with current loads.  Vital Energi will also provide a 15-year operation and maintenance contract, with contracted performance levels that will guarantee the delivery of 100% heat on demand and a total scheme efficiency of 80.15%.  We believe this is the first stage of what will grow to become one of the UK’s major community heat networks.
